But crossing the border and getting our passports stamped etc, proved the latter to be true! Who'd have thunk it eh?
As it happens, Singapore is actually pretty different to a lot of places we've been to.
We didn't really need the big price increase of hostels to tell us that it's a wealthy country. Even on the coach ride there we were drawn in by the unusal (and very expensive) looking buildings and architecture.
We arrived on the day of my Granddads goodbye at home. It's not nice being so far away and we wanted to do something nice for him there too.
We went to a bar called 'Five' first, where you can get various drinks for around 5 Singapore dollars (about £2.50).
Then we walked along the riverfront...
Most of the bars were pretty extortionate but we luckily found that other 'like-minded' people (with an average persons wage) were just buying their own alcohol and drinking on the bridge! Yay!
This seemed much more fitting to Granddad and the atmosphere was a nice one.
My Granddad told me at my uncles wedding years ago, that one day he will shoot up to the the sky with all of the stars and the planets. I figured that wherever in the world we are, those stars and planets are still the same ones, we're just looking at them from a different place that's all.
With our heads being a bit scatty this week, we didn't even think to plan ahead and by the time we got to the tube station, they'd already stopped running.
We went for a bus but weren't quite sure which side to get it from, so we missed that one too.
So in the end, we had to get a taxi. That will hopefully teach us!
The next morning, I woke up to a Skype call from my mum, uncle and aunty-in-law.
It was 7.20am in Singapore, so 12.20am in England.
They talked us through every single part of the goodbye, telling us the order of events, who went, what people said, what the atmosphere was like. They sang us every song that was sung or played and my uncle read us the most beautiful perfect poem that he wrote.
These pictures are dark and blurry but you get the jist :-)...
It made us happy again and we felt like we'd been there after all.
This sounds terrible but for the rest of the day we just stayed at the hostel, watched a film and made the most of the AMAZING masage chair.
We did manage to sort some things out for India too, which we've been attempting to do for ages.
We did also venture out at some point or other. Firstly to get to a different hostel (called Fernleaf - a sister hostel to the one in Kuala Lumpur).
And secondly, to find some food. I even have proof see..
We planned to sort even more out for India and tried to book train tickets. This failed miserably as our cards didn't work. However, mine and Jacks star sign kinda made us feel better about it anyways..
To end the day, we were going to watch a light show which I'm sure would have been a marvel but Marie and Jack were so tired out from the days strenuous activity and lack of sleep last night, that we decided to try to get a decent nights sleep before our big flight in the morning.
Next stop...India!
